FROM THE OFFICE
As some of you may know, I will be leaving Bemidji Town & Country Club as my husband John and I begin our new adventures in Marquette, MI. I would like to thank Bemidji Town & Country Club membership, board of directors, employees, staff and patrons for providing me with many wonderful experiences. It has been a pleasure working for this organization and I hope I have made a positive impact during my time with you. My last official day will be May 29th.
FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Greens aerification is scheduled for Monday, June 2 and Tuesday, June 3. Nine holes per day will be completed.
BENEFITS AND NEEDS OF AERIATION
In short, aeration promotes root growth, removes thatch and organic matter, provides channels for oxygen and gas exchange, improves drainage, reduces compaction, and provides smooth, firm surfaces. It also allows us to sustain a course that endures the wear and tear of mechanical, environmental, and golf pressure we experience every season. Aerification is one technique that helps us accomplish our goal of meeting player demands at BTCC.
Understanding that our practices and recovery time are dictated by the weather, our techniques must be flexible to help address and achieve our agronomic goals. Hollow tine aerification in the late fall creates poor putting surfaces for fall and early spring. A few years ago BTCC officials made the decision to change the hollow tine process to late spring because the better warmer weather will make the recovery faster. Aerification now will contribute high quality putting surfaces this summer and thru the fall. Throughout the season we will be venting the greens as needed to help with compaction and circulate the flow of air throughout the profile. The venting process is non-disruptive to the greens.
We hope this information will help you understand the need for this important cultural practice. If you would like to learn more about aeration, visit the following link.
BTCC will continue to use best agronomical practices that promote and contribute to best turf conditions.
