Evonne McKinzie-Birchmont Committee
Hi fellow members. We are half way thru the golf season and into the throes of a hot summer. The rains in June and warm weather has helped Tom and his staff provide us with great golfing conditions. I hope you are enjoying the course as much as I am.
I would like to communicate to the members, the projects and improvements that have occurred since the last greens committee update.
Fifteen dead trees have been recently removed. Trees were trimmed up and brush removed around the sixteenth tee to improve the grass growing conditions for the tee area. All of the ball washer posts, wood benches and the rain shelter near the seventeenth tee have been painted. The protective fencing for the ladies tees on holes five and six have been replaced and posts painted. The Diablo Nine Bark and Spirea shrubs for the yardage marker areas have not come in yet, so they will be planted after the Birchmont Tournament. Hopefully, the new blue tees on holes six and nine will be ready for use in the Birchmont. Tom and his crew are edging (creating lips) on all of the sand bunkers. New sand has been placed in the following bunkers to bring them to the desired four inch level. Fairway bunker on three, right side of eight, front pot on nine, back right on ten, right side on eleven, right side on fourteen and front left on seventeen. The growing in process on hole number fourteen was not proceeding fast enough so we sodded in the damaged areas and it is almost completely healed!
With the heat and dry conditions of July we finally got to use our new Osmac (computer controlled) watering System. With the improved efficiency of the Osmac System we are able to water during none golfing hours. We are applying the same amount of water (our capacity) in a shorter window of time. Currently from approximately 9:15 PM until 6:30 AM. Initially, we had some problems with a few of the sprinkler heads that were not popping up and functioning. Tom and his staff have identified and repaired them.

Here's a quote from Hank Haney, one of the country's top golf instructors and Tiger Woods' current instructor:
"My swing is too fast may be the biggest misconception ever. Think about it. If you take a fast, lousy swing and slow it down, all you've got left is a slow, lousy swing. Most people swing too slow, not too fast." - Hank Haney
