Bemidji Town & Country Club Online Newsletter - 04/22/06

I believe it is important at this time to update you on the course conditions. As many of you have now observed the course suffered some serious turf loss this winter - severe damage on the putting green and ninth green and a lesser degree of damage on other greens. Tees and fairways came through the winter well. This damage was due primarily to crown hydration, a result of freeze/thaw cycles that I believe likely occurred in January when temps were unusually warm causing numerous melting refreezing events. As severe as some of the damage is I believe we are fortunate that we came through the winter as well as we did. I was concerned about potential damage that a post Thanksgiving rain and ice storm would cause. I believe we survived that simply because the ice was a somewhat porous 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.

In talking to other Superintendents in the northern half of the state they accumulated one to three inches of clear smothering ice and were forced to take measures to try to remove it. The feedback is just starting to come in as to what management strategies worked. It will be a very informative year for the turf management industry.

At this time I have already initiated a plan for the recovery process. I will aerate, spike and overseed all damaged areas. I have received permission from the greens committee to cover these areas with HPI covers which will act as a green house, warming the soil temps and accelerating the grow in process. This is necessary to combat the potential of a cool, cloudy spring like that of 2005. The management staff at BTCC is very much aware of the displeasure of having to play temporary greens. We ask you be patient and work with us in our effort to get our course in top shape as soon as possible.

As always should you have any questions regarding what we are doing on the course feel free to contact me.
