Bemidji Town & CC - June 2002 Newsletter

As you may have seen there are many clubhouse & course improvements taking place. We are currently putting an addition on the clubhouse that will be open to members and golfers anytime the clubhouse is closed for an event.
As far as course improvements, we have budgeted $42,000 for increased maintenance and improvements for Tom's crew and purchased 21 new electric Club Car golf carts, with all of the accessories. Joel Goldstrand is reviewing our course and his ideas will be prioritized by the Long Range committee with improvements to begin ASAP. We are also working on a new well/septic system and practice facility for construction in the fall.

Congratulations to the Tuesday Nite winning teams of: Ken Raw-Jim Smythe, Mark Haluptzok-Brian Israelson, John Countryman-Gary Gangelhoff, Tom Burlingame-Bruce Simenson, Al Snider-Paul Snider, Bob Kobilka-Rob Noren.

The Buick Scramble is fast approaching as we near our Saturday, June 22 start. Information and sign-up is in the proshop. Make sure you pick up one of the rules cards to make sure your team is eligible. This year you MUST have at least 10 scores posted within the last year and MUST have a current handicap index.

As we head into June, our projects started this spring will become more noticeable. The addition to our maintenance building should be completed. Tom and his staff are looking forward to having the needed extra space for his new equipment. We will begin reconditioning #5 and #13 tee boxes. The thinning of the brush and deadfalls between the tee boxes will speed the recovery of that area.
We will be meeting with Joel Goldstrand in June to put together a long-range plan for improvements to our course and practice facilities. Once we have the plans, we will turn them over to the long range planning committee for implementation. Also in June, our committee has a half-day seminar set up with Bob Varek, USGA North-Central Regional Agronomist. We will be discussing issues and programs recommended by the USGA and how they pertain to our operation. We will also be tackling a couple more sand traps this month. Our goal was to have all the trap refurbishment completed this year.
We are following our aggressive plan for this season. We meet twice a month, so if there are ideas you would like to share with our committee feel free to contact a committee member with your thoughts. Our committee needs some help from the membership. The number one thing you as members can do is fix yours and two other ball marks on every green. This habit we greatly improve our putting surfaces.

Our 4th Annual Member Classic is scheduled for Saturday, July 13. We will be having two shotguns; 1:30 pm and 8:30 am. The entry fee is $20.00 per player and the format is 2 person best-ball with 90% handicap. You are allowed to choose your partner, however, the pro-shop will make all foursome pairings. Remember that this event is open to ALL adult members and we encourage women to sign up.
Since your handicaps will be used, everyone will have an equal chance of winning some of the great prizes. We will have other special games and a wonderful meal included after play.
The sign-up for this event will be posted in the pro-shop June 15th. SIGN UP EARLY to assure the time that you want to play

The month of May has turned into a busy month for our staff. The cool Spring has limited Turfgrass growth and recovery, thus resulting in less time mowing. The positive is that it has enabled us to get an early start on other aspects of maintenance such as aerification, bunker edging, tree trimming and clean-up work. At the time of this writing, it appears as though we might be warming up which is great news for facilitating the winter damage recovery process. Let's all keep positive, Summer has to be close!!!

I'd like to extend a warm welcome back to all past league members. It was nice to see so many familiar faces at our Spring Kickoff. I would also like to welcome our new league members and hope everyone has an enjoyable summer of golf.
Although the season has started it is not too late to join us. We offer a 9-hole league on Monday nights and an 18-hole league on Wednesdays. If you are interested there are forms in the locker room with all the information.
Our Member/Guest Tournament will be held on July 10th. Your guest may be a member of BTCC but may not be a member of Ladies' League. Carolyn Dondelinger has offered to chair the committee for the tournament. If you would like to help her out please let her know. There is a signup sheet in the locker room.
If you are thinking about playing in the MWGA tournament in August you will need to be a member of the association. For further information please check the bulletin board or contact Rose Fagerstrom. We would like to see a good turnout from our membership.
We would like to thank Gretchen and her staff for the nice buffet for our kickoff. Please remember if you would like to have the buffet on shotgun days you will need to sign up with the clubhouse the Friday before. If you haven't signed up, the regular menu is available.
Thank you to Ellie Schue for her work for "Rally For A Cure". Liz Neff has volunteered to organize the next Rally For A Cure, which is August 5th and 7th. It's a good cause and we would appreciate everyone's support.
Good Golfing!
Pam Johnson, Chair

Finally some nice weather! The clubhouse is as busy as ever, due to a big increase in our evening business. June is also going to be busy with numerous parties & weddings. Check out our calendar case by the office door to see what's coming up for events in the month of June. Our complete calendar is also available on our members website.
With all of the weddings and parties we have scheduled there will be times when the clubhouse is closed. Weather permitting, the deck will be available for service and once the new addition to the clubhouse is complete we will be able to provide full service to everyone.
Once again, please remember to print your name on all of you sales tickets. This ensures proper placement of charges.
As always, we promise to do our best.

Clubhouse Manager

I want to remind our junior members that they are not allowed to make tee times. They may play with their parents who have made a time or we will work them onto the course as open times permit. Also, they should not be on the premises before noon on Wednesday and after 11:00 am on Thursday (other than on the course on Thursday).
This year we are again hosting a MNPGA Junior Tour Event which will take place on Monday, June 24th. We are holding 12 spots for our junior members and there is no charge for our members. Sign-up is in the proshop and additional details are at:

This summer we will conduct 2 or 3 new fun junior events for our junior members. Please check the proshop for dates and details.

We are currently in the process of cleaning up the area behind and to the west of the proshop. A new bag drop stand is already in place and the gas pump should be removed within a week. I want to remind our members that the area behind the proshop is NOT a parking area and vehicles should only be left unattended for a couple of minutes. We appreciate your cooperation.
We are taking registrations in the proshop for this year's Birchmont Tournament held July 22-27th. We are on a record pace for applicants so I would recommend all members who are interested in playing to reserve a teetime ASAP. Entry forms are available in the proshop or you can register online at Members receive a $45.00 discount for the championship flights and $40.00 for all other flights.

Occasionally we send out emails to our members on important upcoming events and other notifications. We try and keep our database up to date. If you have not been receiving these emails, you can add your name to our database by visiting our members website at The place to add your email is down about half way on the left.

The sign-up for the Annual Men's Club Championship is now posted in the proshop. This event is played scratch and available to players with 10 and under handicap. We are using a season-long format which is the same as last year. Entry is $20.00.
